when you feel irritable, anxious,can’t sleep or feel generally off…
“Ive tried everything! I don’t know why I feel this way”.
Ever said that out loud or thought it?
Let me start by saying, there is a very, very good and logical reason why you feel the way you do. You may not know it yet, but trust that there is. Every time you snap at a loved one and don’t know why, stay up till morning trying to sleep, need that glass of wine(or several) to unwind and even then, the calm lasts only for a bit or you want to escape into a world of video games and Netflix to get your mind off of things…you are unintentionally trying to solve a problem within.
Where you maybe getting stuck is trying to understand what the problem “really is”. Which is helpful information, anytime we want to change how we cope with stress. You can only live this way, for so long.
Imagine this: You are in the attic of your childhood home. You haven’t been there in years, but you know there are about a million boxes of things, crowding up this otherwise large space. The lights are out so you can’t see any of them, but you know they are there every time you stub your toe, cough up dust or trip.
Now imagine someone who wants to help clear this attic with you, walking through it with a flashlight. You now look around and notice the box of forgotten comics, a trunk full of old clothes. Back in the corner is a wooden box of old family photographs, nestled between containers of holiday decorations from last year. You look at an old rocking horse and smile, feel choked when you notice a photograph of the family trip that you did not want to go on, but were forced to. A flash of anger as you recall that job where you were unfairly treated. A pit of of shame sucks your energy out as you remember being laughed at when you asked your teenage crush out.
You want to burn some of these boxes and want to hold others close. This attic, is your life in a room.
This attic is also where most of the ways we learn to cope with stress, were born.
And the one holding the flashlight that will help you see it all? That would be me.
Whether the way you feel today is because of a terrible and painful secret you have locked away within or because you are surrounded by people who don’t get you or because you feel alone and heartbroken and don’t want anyone to know- we will figure this out,
together.
Not only will we figure it out, but we will also find practical ways you can begin to feel much better, on a day to day basis.
The way you feel right now has roots in what you have experienced at a time, before this very minute. It is influenced by the world around you and all it decided for you. Whether it was years ago or yesterday, it is causing you some distress.
Distress you can be free of. Distress you can respond to in ways that don’t feel debilitating.
